“POR UNA CABEZA”

Es uno de los favoritos en
la voz de Gardel. Por mi
experiencia con la audiencia
radial puedo asegurar que la
melodía y la letra de este
tango “burrero” por
excelencia cautivan incluso
a los “no gardelianos”. Es
uno de los temas más
solicitados de la
discografía del zorzal y
conserva una tremenda
vigencia. Porque, ¿quién no
asocia “un final palpitante
cabeza a cabeza” con esta
extraordinaria
interpretación de Gardel?
Nada mejor que leer este
recuerdo del maestro Terig
Tucci, extractado de su
libro “Gardel en New York”
(Webb Press, N.Y. 1969)
donde el músico nos relata
una simpática anécdota
referida a la inspiración
musical de Gardel para
componer el tema. De su
interpretación no decimos
nada más, solo basta
escucharlo...

Suena el teléfono a las tres
de la mañana. Medio dormido
levanto el receptor y oigo
la voz de Gardel que me dice
con evidente satisfacción:
—Che viejo, acabo de
encontrar una melodía
macanuda para el tango " Por
una cabeza".
Y procedió a cantármela ipso
facto. No sé si sería porque
todavía no me había
despertado del todo, que al
oír por teléfono el fruto de
su inspiración, ni la
melodía ni la letra me
hicieron mucha impresión; y
así se lo dije. Algo
amoscado Gardel me contestó
con su fina ironía: —Mira,
Beethoven, vos te quedás con
tus corcheas y semifusas;
pero no te metas conmigo en
asuntos de "matungos"
Me causó gracia la
comparación beethoveniana y
comprendí que nadie como él
—carrerista empedernido y
dueño de un dispendioso
stud— podía hablar con más
autoridad de temas hípicos;
nadie como él podía conocer
la emoción del jugador de
ver a su caballo llegar
victorioso al disco, ni
sentir desaliento de verlo
flaquear en el momento mismo
en que un supremo esfuerzo
lo hubiese colocado en la
categoría de ganador. Como
dicen los versos de su
tango:
“Por una cabeza
de un noble potrillo
que justo en la raya
afloja al llegar . . .”
Tal vez el producto de una
"fija" conferida
sigilosamente al oído, que
fracasa en la raya. Sí, creo
que Gardel tenia razón. Yo
me quedo con mis corcheas.
Además, yo sabía que, lo
mismo que otras canciones
que nos parecen triviales al
principio, el genio de
Gardel ennoblecería este
tango hípico y lo elevaría a
una altura insospechada.

"Por
Una Cabeza"
"Por
Una Cabeza" has been recently
popularized in the
movies,"Scent of a
Woman","True Lies"and
"Schindler's List" and was
also featured in a Canada-Tourism
video advertisement last year
(1996).
"Por
Una Cabeza" - "By a
head" (rough English
translation) was a song Carlos
Gardel composed for a movie (filmed
in Hollywood) where he plays a
horse-race gambler, thus the
"silly" title and even
though it became a big hit around
the world, no one would think of OTB
or horsey-betting when listening to
this wonderful music. The truth is
that it was not the most popular of
his songs. His most popular songs
which I heard while I was still in
Europe and listening to them in many
a tango bar in the Latin quarters
were,"Mi Buenos Aires
Quierido" and "El Dia Que
Me Quieres".
But
we live in a world of fads,
mimicking and duplications. So first
the people in "A Scent of a
Woman" heard it and said
"...that's it we'll use
it!"....then people in
"True Lies" said we need a
tango..hey the one we heard in
"A Scent.." sounded good,
lets play it!"...then the
geniae (plural of geniuses?) in
"Schindler's List" sort of
said the same.... and the rest is
history....but it is still one of
the most beautiful melodies..and
only if one really could hear the
rest of the Carlos Gardel's
songs....and understand the poetry
of his lyrics...he wa truly the king
of tangos.
