José
Francisco Razzano postcard size photo with his signature in ink
(1927?).
"Real Photo" type card, printed on Eastman Kodak Velox postcard
paper and using Eastman's WD Platinum process.
Size: 3 5/16 x 5
1/4 inches, quality:
G-Good, WB-White Border.
| As to the age of
the postcard, I found out that this type of "Postcard Stamp
Box" was only used on cards between 1907-1917. For the
history of Velox Postcard Stamp Box, go
to this Web page.
Since Razzano's
professional life began with the recordings for the "Victor"
in 1911, we could reason that the photo is from about 1911-1917,
but that might not be the case.
Some of Gardel collectors have suggested that the photo could be
after 1920 or from 1927, by Gardel's Uruguayan photographer, José
María Silva. Regarding the Stamp Box, it is possible that this
type of postcard might have been used in Latin America even during
the 1920's. For ex., 78RPM records were still produced in Latin
America in the 1960's. If
anyone can help in narrowing this down further, please
send me a note?

Pencil signature of Guillermo
Desiderio Barbieri dated June 30, 1930.
Gardel's guitarist and composer since 1919, certifies of having received from Gardel and Razzano the sum of 540 pesos
for his services rendered as their guitar accompaniment. Barbieri
started working for Gardel on June 2, 1921. Here
are some of the most popular songs Barbieri composed for Gardel: the
"Recordándote", "Resignate hermano" (in colaboration
with José Ricardo), "Se llama mujer", "Tierra
hermana", "Tus violetas", "Viejo smoking"; and
the waltzes: "Rosas de otoño", "Tu vieja ventana" and
"Alicia".
In a 1933 article for "Cancionera" magazine, this is what
Barbieri said of Gardel: "Such is my familiarity with Gardel, that
when he sings, I know the meaning of his slightest movement and each
inclination of his head, is the secret language, only I can understand".
Barbieri
was born on Sept. 25, 1894 and died together with Gardel in Medellin on
June 24, 1935. On the right: Guillermo Barbieri in 1933.
