On the right, when Gardel was 18 years old.

Who's the guy in the picture? by Alberto Paz (Posted with permission of El Firulete, The Argentine Tango Newsletter) Hanging on a wall, a portrait of a handsome Carlos Gardel overlooks an area where some of my friends and I sometimes sit around to enjoy lengthy talks about tango. This is a whole new experience for some of them because they have this image of exotic savagery from a far away land that colonialism has attached to the Tango. So, sooner or later they pop the question: Who's the guy in the picture? I turn my head towards the wall, I crack a faint smile, and this is what I tell them: That one is Gardel, his friends call him
Carlitos. It is not hard to befriend him. I ought to know because I
invented him. Then, I don't know how, something very
strange happened. It materialized like an angel from within. I became
prophetic. I woke up biblical. I glanced at the spider webs entangled on
the ceiling, and I said to myself, self I said: Who's the guy in the
picture was inspired on a poem by Argentine poet Humberto Constantini. |
