From about 1912-1935, Gardel composed 183 tangos and recorded 772 themes, more than 500 of them were tangos. Some of the more popular songs were recorded two or three times. Due to artistic or technical imperfections, some of these recordings were never published. For the above reasons, there are more than 1000 distinct recordings currently available to collectors. I am aware of about 1014 versions. In his repertoire, Gardel interpreted 26 music styles. Most of them were tangos but also included: milonga, chacarera, zamba, pasodoble, ranchera, serenata, fado, shimmy, passillo, fox-trot waltz, etc. |

Berthe
Mirá, mamita, otra media horita -me decía- si no te importa llamarme otra vez." |

You probably believe
that Gardel was the first ever to sing a Tango! Five years before Gardel sings "Mi noche triste", Arturo A. Mathon (1887-1933), in 1912 sings the Tango: La chirimoya argentina Apparently, the first sung tango, "Dejá de jugar che, che", was in 1903 by Alfredo Munilla acompanying himself on a guitar. It's a one sided record by the Zonofono company. The tango's original name was "Dejá de joder che" and its author is Angel Gregorio Villoldo (16-2-1861 / 14-10-1919). The record is owned by the collector Héctor Lucci in Buenos Aires. |
