Carlos Gardel and the Turf

Carlos Gardel and his horse Lunático. Gardel's friend, Irineo Leguizamo, ran many races with this horse.

Besides Lunático, Gardel owned: La Pastora, Cancionero, Theresa, Amargura, Explotó, Mocoroa y Guitarrista.

But despite what many people think, Lunático did make money for his owner. Gardel bought him for 5.000 pesos in 1925. During his career, Lunático ran 34 races, winning 11 of them and earning 72.000 pesos (info from Romeo Otero Bosque).

The turf is probably the one single reason why Gardel died a poor man. In his last years, he told his lawyer, Armando Defino, that he wanted to get rid of the horses and the habit since he realized that his popularity would not last forever and he would have to start saving for a rainy day.

Francisco Maschio was the owner of a big Stud in Buenos Aires and a friend of Gardel.
He also owned a Stud Club, where Gardel, who as a horse owner and race track regular, would entertain and be entertained on many an occassion

" -En primer lugar yo no tengo caballos, sino un caballo: Cancionero. Y le aseguro que eso cuesta menos que una mujer. Así como otros mantienen a una mujer, yo atiendo a los gastos de ese animalito, que a lo mejor también me da una coz, pero no me pilla de sorpresa, ni el pobre me ha jurado amor eterno..."

"Cuando la calle Corrientes era angosta y Gardel tenía caballos de carrera en sociedad con Maschio, ocurrió el episodio que voy a relatarles -comienza diciendo el popular cantor-. Me encontraba una tarde en un café céntrico en compañía de Roberto Fugazot cuando Gardel se hizo presente en el mismo para invitarnos a un asado que daban a la peonada del stud. La reunión fué de lo más animada, contándose también con la presencia del payador Víctor Galieri. Poco después invitados a cantar, lo hicimos a dúo con Fugazot. La presencia de Gardel "nos inhibía, por respeto, a realizarlo cada uno por nuestra cuenta", rematando luego la pequeña fiesta Gardel que entonó sus mejores canciones. Ese día corría en las pistas de Palermo el caballo Lunático de propiedad de Carlos, y con su generosidad característica nos dijo:"Aquí les regalo cien boletos. Si gana vengan al puerto que me voy para Montevideo. El caballo -continúa Irusta- entró segundo con la monta de Leguisamo, y nosotros lo mismo fuimos al puerto, pero no a cobrar, sino a despedir al amigo, que Carlos lo era de veras y en el mejor de los sentidos".
