Carlos Gardel:
His Personal belongings

Below is a sample of some of the items that belonged to Gardel. Depending on the type of the item, most of his personal things had the monogram "CG" attached, engraved or stamped on them. Even his clothes were embroidered with his initials. He used only the highest quality, latest fashion items bought or made for him in London, Paris and New York.

Most of these items are on display in the Tango museum in San Telmo. Some items have been loaned to them by "Casa del Teatro Argentina". Some items are on loan to Gardel museum.

On the left is Gardel's gold monogram from his wallet above.
His monograms adorned all of his personal objects.
Owned by: Casa del Teatro Argentina.

Gardel's favourite cigarrette/cigar box

Gardel's favourite cigar/cigarrette box made in France in the 1920's in the art-deco style. This peace of furniture used to occupy the top of the dining room table in his house at 735 Jean Jaurés.

Gold lighter custom made for Gardel by a Parisian jeweler. His name is engraved across the lighter. The bottom of the lighter is badly burned as the result of the tremendous fire in which Gardel perished as the result of the Medellin tragedy on June 24, 1935.

Gardel's personal object rescued from the Medellin fire

Assorted combs, brushes, a hook for undoing his shoe laces without the need for bending down and a shoe horn. All of these items are monogrammed. These personal belongings were also rescued from the Medellin airplane crash. Owned by: Casa del Teatro.

It can be seen in the "Casa de Teatro" museum in Buenos Aires.

One of Gardel's Steamer trunks (baúl). Up to a dozen trunks
could be used for his overseas trips.

Gardel's Karl Zeiss binoculars which he religiously brought with him to each horse racing event. He spent a lot of money on horse racing, even owning a number of horses. In his last few years, he would complain about how much money he has blown on this sport and tried to curb his spending.

Gardel - New York, March 22, 1934

Gardel's photo from the Movie "Tango Bar" dedicated to his friend Francisco Maschio, care taker of his racing horses. The photo is signed: New York, March 22, 1934.
In this photo, Gardel appears with his favourite binoculars.

Gardel's New York cheques - the year is 1934

Three cheques used by Gardel in New York in 1934. You will notice that only the signature is his. Due to his poor domination of English, he had someone else complete the rest of the cheque. The top cheque is for a passage to Europe on the steamer Bremen and the second one is for his rent at "Beaux Arts Apartments" in New York.

These guitars belonged to Carlos Gardel and José Razzano. The one on the bottom is Gardel's.

Gardel's Agenda from June 1929. It is owned by a well-known Gardel collector, Angel Olivieri
Here are the excerpts from the notes for the next day:
10:30AM - Recordings at Odeon. By luck today we finish the series.
14:00 "Pica-terra" stew with the skinny Allipi and the Frenchman Laurent in the "Tropezon".
Dinner with Isabel at "Chantecler".
See Maschio and find out if there is anything (a horse) worth betting on.
Tomorrow morning Legui (Leguisamo) will be waiting for me at Palermo (race track).
Tell Aviador (his chauffer) to drive me in the Graham (his Graham-Paige car).
Some experts say that the above agenda is a falsification.

Gardel signed photo - 1930's
Someone from Spain had this Gardel signed photo on sale on eBay for the ridiculous sum of $CDN6200.
It is a 1930's photo by Gardel's Uruguayan photographer De Silva. Unlike the artists of today,
Gardel was his own promoter and would carry a bunch of these photos with him for his fans.
(The caption says: Dedicada a mis dos grandes amigos, Oscar y Eduardo).
